OVERVIEW:
My final year at York University saw me working on my capstone project, which was an original 2 player card game made to be played on a physical interactive game board. The game revolved around the theme of emotions, which players used to battle against each other. We used a Raspberry Pi 2, along with two Arduinos to control the physical computing aspects of this project, which included buttons for player input as well as LED lights on the board to display the game state. |

I designed the game as well as the cards, and made the art and graphics for the elements used to play the game. I also programmed the internal workings of the board in the Raspberry Pi 2 (coded using Python), and the two Arduinos we used. My fellow team member oversaw the physical creation of the game board, which I assisted in. You can get a glimpse of Emoti-Conundrum in the video above.

DESIGN THOUGHTS AND LEARNINGS:
Emotion Based Stats
- The crucial resources in Emoti-Conundrum were all disguised as emotions narratively, with Happiness representing the players health value. Additionally, there were also three emotional currencies, Fear Control (FC), Anger Control (AC), and Sadness Control (SC) which enabled players to play various cards.
- Along with serving as a currency, FC, AC, and SC also served an additional purpose each. FC functioned as a shield with any damage being dealt having to go through a players FC first, AC allowed players to play high damage cards, and SC helped with regenerating the players health. This provided a greater depth to the currencies opening up the game to more informed usage of the three types of currencies.
Spell Cards and Emotion Cards
- There were two main types of cards in Emoti-Conundrum:
- Spell Cards: These cards did not have any requirement to be played and mainly served the purpose of either modifying the players or their opponents stats, or having cool game changing effects.
- Emotion Cards: These cards required a set amount of FC, AC, and SC to be played and were the main means or doing damage in the game, though they had other uses as well. All emotion cards provided players with two options from which they had to choose to play one.
